Le métier de peintre-décorateur permettait aux artistesissus de l’Académiede vivre correctement, en répondant à la commande bourgeoise, au tournant du XIXe et du XXe siècle. La carrière de Victor Van Dyck commença dans lesannées 1880 avecla décoration intérieure de brasseries ou restaurants situés sur les boulevards du centreet place De Brouckère. Il réalisa aussi des décors intérieurs de maisons bourgeoises, notamment des plafonds. C’est ainsi qu’il fut invité à travailler à Londres et à Blackpool à la réalisation de nombreux décors de plafonds de théâtres lors de leur construction ou de leur réaménagement. L’Association du Patrimoine artistique dévoilera les nombreux dessins aquarellés,projets de décor, qui ont été retrouvés chez les héritiers de l’artiste, après avoir dormi dans des tiroirs pendant une centaine d’années. Grâce à leur mise à jour, il a été possible de lui restituer la paternité de la peinture murale qui orne le grand hall de l’Hôtel Hallet et d'attester sa participation à la décoration de la bibliothèque Solvay en 1902, auprès d'Adolphe Crespin. Un certain nombre de ses projets sont aussi liés à son travail en Angleterre où quelques-unes de ses réalisations sont encore visibles aujourd'hui. Le côté exceptionnel de ces redécouvertes fait partie de ces bellessurprises que l’histoire de l’art nousfait apprécier de temps à autre.

Victor Van Dyck (1862-1943), painter-decorator
At the turn of the XIXthand XXthcenturies, the profession of decorative painter allowed artists from the Academy to make a decent living by responding to bourgeois commissions. The career of Victor Van Dyck (1863 - 1943) began in the 1880s with the interior decorations of brasseries and restaurants located on the central boulevards and on Place De Brouckère. He also created interior decorations for bourgeois houses, mainly ceiling murals. His expertise led him to work in London and Blackpool on the embellishment of theatre ceilings. In 1902, Van Dyck worked in Brussels with Adolphe Crespin on the Solvay Library’s decoration. The Association du Patrimoine artistique will display the numerous drawings and decoration projects, part of the artist’s estate, which were discovered by his heirs after a hundred years.
The exhibition will unveil some fifty watercolour projects by Victor Van Dyck. Thanks to their rediscovery, it has been possible to restore his authorship of a mural decorating the main hall of the Hallet Hotel as well as the decoration of the Solvay Library. A good number of these projects are also related to his stay in England, where some of his works have been preserved. The outstanding nature of these rediscoveries is one of those nice surprises that art history can occasionally offer.

Dank zij het beroep van schilder en decorateur konden kunstenaars van de Academie rond de eeuwwisseling van de XIXeen XXeeeuw behoorlijk hun kost verdienen, inspelend op bestellingen van de toenmalige burgerij. De carrière van Victor Van Dyck begon in de jaren 80 met interieurinrichtingen van brasseries of restaurants gelegen aan de boulevards van het centrum en het De Brouckèreplein. Hij maakte ook interieurdecoraties voor burgerlijke huizen, met name de plafonds. Zo werd hij uitgenodigd om in Londen en Blackpool te werken aan de productie van decors voor theaterplafonds. In 1902 realiseerde hij in Brussel met Adolphe Crespin de decoratie van de Solvay-bibliotheek.
De tentoonstelling toont de vele tekeningen van decorprojecten, die werden ontdekt bij de erfgenamen van de kunstenaar, na honderd jaar in lades te hebben geslapen.
Deze tentoonstelling onthult een vijftigtal aquarelprojecten van Victor Van Dyck. Dankzij hun terugvinden was het mogelijk om hem het vaderschap toe te kennen van de muurschildering die de grote zaal van het Hallet hotel siert als ook de decoratie van de Solvay-bibliotheek. Een groot aantal van zijn projecten heeft ook een verband met zijn verblijf in Engeland, waar enkele van zijn creaties bewaard zijn gebleven. Deze herontdekking is een van die mooie verrassingen die, van tijd tot tijd, de kunstgeschiedenis ons laat waarderen.
